“Pissed Off!: Strategies to Parenting and Supporting Children with Traumatic Beginnings” By Dr. Hillary Wynn, M.D., BC

August 01 03:29 2026

Dr. Hillary Wynn knows first-hand about caring for traumatized and neglected children, as well as teaching caregivers how to care for themselves. She and her husband raised three of their own biological children and four adopted siblings who were removed from their parents due to neglect. The effects of these children’s trauma impacted every member of the newly-created family. However, with unconditional love, dedication, hard work, professional parent-helpers, therapists, friends and extended family members, Dr. Wynn and her husband did their utmost to meet the needs of all their children and provide them with rich, full childhoods.

Dr. Wynn’s journey to psychiatry began while growing up in a family with addiction and physical abuse. She processed and understood the psychodynamics of being herself a “favored child” and her siblings’ aggression and resentment of her. She saw that people’s behavior was influenced by the environment, genetics, temperament, psychoeconomics and birth order. This capacity allowed her to forgive and accept her parents and angry siblings. In her teens, she decided that she wanted to make a difference for children who were exposed to significant childhood adversities, believing that treating and educating them about the effects of childhood trauma could reduce their risk of an adult life of adversity, chronic illness and intergenerational trauma.

She has now written a book to help inspire and motivate others to adopt a child (or children) who has come from traumatic circumstances, and who needs a secure, loving home to grow up in.
